Florian Wirtz’s Agent Reveals His Great Desire to See the Player Wear Real Madrid’s Shirt
Mansion Sports – Real Madrid had been linked with Florian Wirtz for a considerable period before the player ultimately joined Liverpool FC last summer.
Nevertheless, Los Blancos actually had the opportunity to recruit the former Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder, and that possibility is considered to remain open in the future.
Wirtz had been on Real Madrid’s radar since he impressed as an 18-year-old player at Leverkusen.
Like many other elite European clubs, Madrid viewed him as an extraordinary talent, and their scouting reports reflected a very positive impression.
However, in the end, the Spanish capital club chose to allocate 165 million euros to recruit Dean Huijsen, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alvaro Carreras, and Franco Mastantuono, prioritizing needs in other positions.
Wirtz’s Agent Reveals His Desire to See His Client at Real Madrid
In an interview on the Phrasenmaher podcast, Wirtz’s agent, Volker Struth, stated that he holds great hope of seeing his client follow in the footsteps of Toni Kroos, who is also under his representation.
Struth emphasized that he was not behind the various offers that emerged at the time. He conveyed that his greatest desire is to see Florian play for Real Madrid, and he feels he is not the only one who shares that view.
He also mentioned his relationship with Toni Kroos and his connection with Real Madrid’s management, which he believes could be a supporting factor. He is convinced that Wirtz would feel very happy playing at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Wirtz is currently performing quite well with Liverpool. Considering his very young age, his career journey is regarded as still long, and various possibilities remain open.
Xabi Alonso’s Role in the Potential Transfer
During that period, many reports stated that the then-coach, Xabi Alonso, was interested in bringing Wirtz with him to the Bernabeu, even though the player was not the club’s top priority. Struth confirmed that Alonso had indeed given a signal of approval regarding the possibility of the transfer.
He explained that when the transfer situation was between Bayern Munich and Liverpool, he contacted Wirtz’s parents and also called Alonso to suggest that the coach attempt to bring him in and speak with the club president.
The response he received was clear, namely that discussions should be conducted directly with the president.
Struth then sent a message to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, recommending Wirtz as an interesting player worthy of consideration.
He stated that Alonso actually wanted to recruit Wirtz, but sometimes timing and circumstances do not align.
In that season, the squad’s condition, budget, and various other considerations made the transfer incompatible with the plans.
He also added that Real Madrid’s finances are not always in an abundant condition.
Nevertheless, Struth believes that Florian Wirtz would improve the quality of any team he represents.
Perez replied to the message by expressing appreciation for the recommendation given, but directed further discussion to the club’s general manager, Jose Angel Sanchez.
Subsequently, the German agent learned that Real Madrid did not seriously consider making a move to recruit Wirtz.
Real Madrid’s Considerations in Overlooking the Transfer
Real Madrid’s decision not to proceed with efforts to sign Wirtz at that time was considered unsurprising.
Two years earlier, the club had spent a significant amount of funds to recruit Jude Bellingham from the Bundesliga and projected him as a midfielder operating behind the forward line. In addition, the presence of Arda Guler further increased competition in that sector.
With a squad composition already strengthened by talented young players, Real Madrid’s management at that time chose not to prioritize the recruitment of Wirtz, despite their interest in him having emerged since his early years.
