Manchester City and Donnarumma Transfer Saga Continues
Mansion Sports – Manchester City continue to be linked with Gianluigi Donnarumma, despite currently having two primary options between the posts in Ederson and James Trafford.
The situation has intensified following Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to exclude Donnarumma from their long-term plans.
Donnarumma’s Transfer Status and City’s Strategy
The eight-time Premier League champions are not expected to make a serious move for Donnarumma during the remaining weeks of the summer transfer window unless there is a pressing need to replace Ederson.
According to a report from Sky Sports, City are inclined to conclude the market with Ederson as their first-choice goalkeeper, supported by new signing Trafford, who joined the squad in July.
Possible Shift If Ederson Leaves
A change of plans could occur if Ederson, who is entering the final year of his contract, receives a serious offer from Galatasaray and decides to depart.
Only under such circumstances would City likely pursue a new goalkeeper, with Donnarumma standing out as the most viable candidate.
Early-Season Performances of Ederson and Trafford
Ederson missed the opening match of the season due to illness but returned to the squad for the clash against Tottenham Hotspur, although Trafford retained his place in the starting eleven.
The young English goalkeeper, however, displayed inconsistency and committed an error that led to Tottenham’s second goal.
Donnarumma’s Farewell to PSG
Meanwhile, Donnarumma has officially bid farewell to Paris Saint-Germain supporters after manager Luis Enrique decided to take a different direction regarding the goalkeeping position. The Italian international has been clear about his intention to leave the European giants.
Limited Interest and Transfer Fee Concerns
Sky’s report highlights that City’s interest in Donnarumma has so far amounted only to initial inquiries, with the club unwilling to meet PSG’s valuation of £35–43 million ($47–58 million). Suggestions of a personal agreement with the player have also been dismissed as inaccurate.
Key Factor: Ederson’s Future
The likelihood of Donnarumma joining City is closely tied to Ederson’s future. Galatasaray remain the most determined suitor, but the Turkish transfer window closes nearly two weeks after the Premier League deadline.
As a result, City are unlikely to sanction Ederson’s departure after September 1, given that they would not have sufficient time to secure a replacement.
Donnarumma’s Limited Alternatives
Donnarumma’s options to join another major club appear restricted. Manchester United are closing in on Senne Lammens, Chelsea have shown little interest in pursuing a new goalkeeper, and most other elite clubs already have established first-choice keepers in place.
