Mansion Sports – Marc Guehi is reportedly feeling undervalued following the failure of his transfer to Liverpool during last summer’s transfer window and is unlikely to regret his decision to join Manchester City in January, according to former Germany international Didi Hamann.

The England international defender was previously close to moving from Crystal Palace to Anfield, but the transfer collapsed at the final stages.

He subsequently joined Manchester City earlier this month for a reported transfer fee of 20 million pounds sterling.

The failed move to Liverpool is believed to have influenced Guehi’s decision in choosing his new club, especially after he opted to join Pep Guardiola’s team at the Etihad Stadium.

Guehi Joins Manchester City from Crystal Palace in January

After undergoing a lengthy transfer saga with Liverpool in the summer, Guehi ultimately remained at Crystal Palace during the first half of the 2025–2026 season. He contributed to the club’s debut appearance in European competition through the UEFA Europa Conference League.

However, the situation changed when several Manchester City defenders suffered injuries, leaving Pep Guardiola facing a shortage of fit central defenders. This condition quickly made Guehi a primary target for the Manchester-based club.

With players such as Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and John Stones sidelined due to injury, Guehi made his debut in a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers shortly after joining.

However, he was unable to feature in the Champions League match against Galatasaray due to player registration regulations.

Guehi’s situation could have been very different if his move to Liverpool last summer had been successfully completed.

At that time, The Reds were seeking to strengthen their central defensive depth, particularly due to uncertainty surrounding the future of Ibrahima Konate.

A deal worth 35 million pounds sterling with Crystal Palace appeared close to completion ahead of the transfer window deadline.

However, the London-based club cancelled the transaction on the final day of the window amid concerns that manager Oliver Glasner might resign, following the earlier departure of Eberechi Eze.

As a result of this decision, Guehi remained at Palace. Although Liverpool was later reported to be considering a renewed approach, Manchester City ultimately moved more quickly and secured his signature.

Didi Hamann subsequently stated that the experience during the summer likely influenced Guehi’s decision to choose City over Liverpool.

Hamann: Guehi May Feel Disappointed Over the Failed Summer Transfer

In an interview with CasinoBeats, Hamann, who previously played for both Manchester City and Liverpool, stated that Marc Guehi actually had many club options.

Bayern Munich was also reportedly interested in him, requiring him to carefully consider the best step for his career.

Hamann believes that Guehi will receive opportunities to play at Manchester City. He described Guehi as the best English central defender at present and highlighted his strong performances with the national team.

He also revealed that Liverpool could have secured Guehi in the summer if they had been willing to pay slightly more.

Therefore, it is possible that Guehi feels Liverpool missed their opportunity.

Hamann speculated that this sense of being undervalued may have been one of the factors influencing Guehi’s decision.

He also added that although Manchester City has signed many expensive players over the past 12 to 18 months, the team’s performances have not been fully optimal, although not as problematic as Liverpool’s.

Nevertheless, Hamann is confident that Guehi will become a very strong player for Manchester City and is unlikely to regret his decision to join the club.
