Mansion Sports – Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement in principle to sell club captain Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid.

The agreement marks a significant change for the North London club as they prepare to part ways with one of their most influential and controversial defensive figures.

Atletico Madrid Secure Long-Term Defensive Target

Diego Simeone has finally secured his desired player after Atletico Madrid reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham to sign Romero, according to Sky Sports.

The transfer package for the Argentina international is understood to be worth around £34.2 million plus performance-related bonuses.

In addition, Spurs have protected their future interests by ensuring that a 15 percent sell-on clause is included in the final terms of the transfer agreement.

The Spanish giants have long admired the Argentine defender, and throughout the transfer window it became increasingly clear that Spurs were open to selling their captain if a suitable offer arrived.

Romero initially joined the North London club on a season-long loan from Atalanta in the summer of 2021 before Tottenham made the agreement permanent the following year.

Romero Chooses Madrid Over Premier League Rival

The centre-back had always prioritised a move to Atletico Madrid despite attracting strong interest from several major clubs across Europe.

Inter Milan were interested in bringing the former Atalanta star back to Serie A, while Tottenham’s North London rivals Arsenal were also seriously linked with a surprise move for him.

The departure comes despite Romero’s contract with Spurs remaining valid until the summer of 2029, bringing an end to his time in North London, during which the defender helped Tottenham win a trophy by lifting the 2024-25 Europa League.

An Emotional Legacy Left in North London

Romero’s time in the Premier League will be remembered for his outstanding technical quality as well as his disciplinary issues.

Although he received two red cards last season during Spurs’ battle to avoid Premier League relegation, the 28-year-old played an important role in helping the club avoid relegation, making 32 appearances in all competitions while contributing six goals and four assists during a season that tested everyone at the club.

Across five seasons in North London, Romero made 124 appearances for Spurs and scored 12 goals, while also receiving four red cards in the Premier League.

His uncompromising and intense style of play made him a fan favourite, although it also occasionally became a source of frustration for some supporters.

Overcoming Tensions with Spurs Supporters

The relationship between the player and the supporters was not always without problems. Romero faced strong criticism from fans after he was seen preparing to attend the Apertura final of Argentina’s Primera División between his boyhood club Belgrano and River Plate rather than being present for Tottenham’s important end-of-season match against Everton.

However, the defender ultimately attended the final match of the season, when Spurs secured their Premier League safety.

With his future now in Madrid, the Argentine leaves behind a complicated legacy at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
