The Ballon d'Or winner’s admission that one “cannot refuse the best clubs in the world” sparked accusations of disloyalty from fans online. However, the Spanish player has now clarified that his words were taken out of their essential context.

The 29-year-old caused a stir last week when he publicly suggested that a future at Santiago Bernabeu was not entirely off the table.

Rodri stated: “Playing for Atletico does not prevent me from playing for Real Madrid; there are other players who have gone that path. Not immediately, but eventually. You cannot refuse the best clubs in the world. I want to return to Spain, yes, of course.”

In response to the media storm sparked by his comments, Rodri expressed frustration that a long conversation was condensed into a provocative headline.
