Mansion Sports – Florian Wirtz has finally opened up about the long process behind his high-profile move to Liverpool for a staggering £116 million ($156 million), a record fee that makes him one of the most expensive signings in English football history. 

The 22-year-old midfielder admitted that he had to carefully reflect before turning down Bayern Munich in favor of a new challenge in the Premier League.

Leaving His Comfort Zone in Germany

Wirtz emphasized that leaving Bayer Leverkusen marked a significant step in his career.

“Just like five years ago when I left Köln for Leverkusen at the age of 16, I was looking for the best place to continue developing and to become a more successful player. That is why I chose Liverpool – and so far, I do not regret it,” he told Kicker.

A Difficult Choice Between Bayern and Liverpool

The midfielder revealed that he thoroughly weighed the prospects of joining either Bayern Munich or Liverpool.

“In the end, it was not an easy decision. But I approached it with complete confidence, and I am very happy with the choice I made,” he said.

“This was a difficult step, leaving behind the entire environment I was familiar with and moving to a new country with all the changes it brings. A new league with a different style of play is obviously a bigger challenge, but I deliberately chose this path so I can grow and become a better player,” he explained.

With such a high transfer fee attached to his name, Wirtz acknowledged that expectations from fans would naturally be immense. However, he insisted he would not let the price tag weigh him down.

“Of course, fans expect more when a club spends a significant sum compared to when they sign a player for less. But I do not put pressure on myself. I just want to give my best. The transfer fee is simply part of football, and it will not change the way I play,” he affirmed.
