Mansion Sports – Jürgen Klopp’s home debut as Germany’s national team coach ended in disappointment.

A 1-0 defeat to Greece in the UEFA Nations League means Klopp’s start with Die Mannschaft has not gone according to expectations.

Even so, Klopp does not entirely view the result as a bad sign. Amid his frustration, he identified one period of play that he felt showed the players were beginning to understand what he wanted.

For Klopp, the process of building a new team takes time, and he remains convinced that Germany are on the right track.

Klopp Frustrated After Defeat to Greece

Germany coach Jürgen Klopp was understandably unhappy after the 1-0 home defeat to Greece in the Nations League. However, he still saw reasons for hope.

Klopp said that he had told his players “many things” in the dressing room after the final whistle. Speaking to ARD, he discussed his disappointing home debut on Sunday night in Augsburg.

“This is part of the process. The lineup, the number of changes, everything is 100 percent my responsibility. It was clear that we were not going to completely dismantle Greece’s defence, which played very deep.”

“I can accept if we do not win by a big score today, or even if we do not win at all. But you must not lose. Yet we still lost,” Klopp said.

After drawing 1-1 against the Netherlands on Thursday, Klopp made five changes to his starting lineup.

Among them were Alexander Nübel, Yann Aurel Bisseck, and debutant Bambase Conte, who replaced Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Nadiem Amiri.

Klopp Calls for a More Consistent Playing Pattern

“We have been together for a week, we faced an opponent who defended, we are a newly formed team, so we need a pattern of play,” Klopp said.

The statement served as Klopp’s defence of his players, but at the same time, he also criticised how rarely they consistently implemented the planned approach on the pitch.

According to Klopp, the first 15 minutes of the second half were the most notable period and the “positive highlight” of the match.

“Then we knew what the opponent was doing, we had prepared the team to deal with it and the pattern of play started to become visible,” Klopp said.

“But after that we did not do it again. I do not know why yet.”

Germany: What Keeps Jürgen Klopp Hopeful Despite the Difficult Start?

Although Klopp’s first spell on the touchline with the Germany national team ended with one draw and one defeat from his first two matches, the coach remains confident about what lies ahead.

“I would rather have a bad start than a bad ending. Everything will come together because that always happens when you do the right things. And we are doing the right things,” Klopp said.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Nübel said that the players in front of him created only “one or two chances.”

“We did not have a single shot inside the penalty area today. We had too much possession in areas where we did not actually need it. Greece then counter-attacked two or three times and had two chances.”

“Then that deflected shot went in. We did not take enough shots on goal and the situation becomes difficult when the opponent defends so deeply,” said the Besiktas goalkeeper, who made his fourth international appearance.

Kimmich Admits Germany Struggled to Break Down Greece’s Deep Defence

“It was not a good performance from us either,” captain Joshua Kimmich said in a rather gloomy assessment.

According to him, Germany “struggled against the deep defensive block. Overall, we were too static and not creative enough.”

The Bayern Munich midfielder then had to watch from the pitch in the 74th minute as Dimitrios Kourbelis scored the winning goal, which was greeted with loud celebrations from the Greek supporters.

“We moved too little, created too few chances. For me, 0-0 would have been fairer. That we actually lost this match is really unfortunate,” Kimmich said.

Germany Have an Opportunity to Bounce Back in the Next Match

Kimmich is no longer part of the second squad called up by Klopp, which will play their next two Nations League matches during this international break.

On Thursday, Germany will look to improve their result when they face Serbia in Munich. Then, the following Sunday, an away match against Greece awaits.

The 2004 European champions currently lead Nations League A Group 2 with six points from their opening two matches. Meanwhile, the German national team sit third with one point.

For Klopp, these early results do not yet provide an ideal picture of what he wants to build with Germany. However, the 15-minute period at the start of the second half showed that when the players understand the planned pattern and execute it consistently, the desired style of play begins to emerge.
