Mansion Sports – UEFA have taken a major step toward strengthening the implementation of video technology by creating the Clear Line platform.

Clear Line itself is a guide that anyone can use to understand when and how video assistant referees should intervene.

Clear Line Becomes a Guide to VAR Usage

The newspaper AS reported that Clear Line has already begun operating. The platform summarizes various cases, incidents, procedures, and criteria that must be applied, all of which are designed to explain how the technology that has so often caused controversy works.

Roberto Rosetti, head of UEFA's refereeing committee, said: "The question everyone asks is: when should the video assistant referee intervene? This is the main topic. Nobody knows when they should do it."

He continued: "We used our experience of around eight years, various VAR cases, and more than 100 clear clips, and we created Clear Line."

"It is a document that explains when and how the video assistant referee should intervene, and this document has been prepared so that everyone has a clear understanding."

"It is not only intended for referees, but also for football. It is intended for players, coaches, fans, and journalists."

For Rosetti, the foundation of VAR must be based on a system capable of regulating everything.

How Clear Line Works

Velasco Carballo, another UEFA official, explained how the revolutionary tool works.

"This is not a web page for referees, and it is not a web page designed for refereeing organizations," he said.

He continued: "It is a web page created to explain our basic principles to anyone. This is a space that we want to be used as a reference after Champions League matches, in order to compare different cases with the clips available in the library."

He added: "This is a web page intended for clubs, players, and fans. And in some texts, someone may find expressions that are very common and do not use refereeing terminology, but we did that deliberately."

UEFA Will Implement the Guidelines Starting from the 2026-2027 Season

Starting from the 2026-2027 season, UEFA will fully follow these guidelines. The objective is simple. VAR will intervene less frequently and with greater precision, focusing on serious and clear errors rather than minor and marginal mistakes.
