Mansion Sports – Gianni Infantino has refused to step down from his role as the most powerful figure in world football, with FIFA confirming that he will continue his bid for re-election.

The 56-year-old remains determined to lead world football’s governing body for another four-year term, despite growing legal threats and an internal revolt against his leadership.

Infantino Remains in Position Amid Mounting Pressure

FIFA has officially reaffirmed that Infantino will run for a third term as president, despite widespread opposition and calls for him to resign from his position.

The Swiss-Italian administrator has been under immense pressure since the collapse of the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) scheme, a project that sought to sell minority stakes in the commercial operations and staging of the men’s and women’s World Cups to private investors.

A spokesperson for the governing body confirmed the president’s intentions to The Athletic, stating: “The FIFA President announced in April that he would stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr. Infantino will stand for re-election.”

Collapse of FIFA Forward Enterprise

The FFE proposal became a catalyst for the ongoing civil war within the football hierarchy, leading to the formation of an unprecedented alliance of confederations opposing FIFA’s leadership.

When the plan was introduced, UEFA announced that its member nations would boycott FIFA competitions, stating that they “unanimously and categorically reject the FIFA proposal.”

South American football governing body CONMEBOL also expressed its position regarding the change in commercial direction, emphasizing that financial decisions “must always serve the interests of football and never compromise its essence.”

Faced with a total blockade from the major powers in football, Infantino was forced to back down and eventually confirmed that the proposal would be scrapped.

Immediate Response from FIFA President

In his statement confirming the end of the FFE project, Infantino acknowledged the deep divisions the plan had created among stakeholders in world football.

He said: “After carefully listening to all views, it became clear that the project had created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support that existed, were no longer compatible with the interests of the objectives that had been established from the outset.”

Infantino subsequently commented on his plans to repair the divisions, adding: “Going forward, my intention is to bring all stakeholders back together in the coming days and weeks in a spirit of common interest in our sport, as well as with the aim of continuing to develop football throughout the world, particularly in countries that most need our support.”

Controversies and Political Ties Under Scrutiny

Beyond the commercial initiative, Infantino’s tenure has been marked by frequent controversies, ranging from soaring ticket prices at the most recent World Cup to alleged interference in disciplinary matters.

The decision to overturn a one-match suspension imposed on USMNT forward Folarin Balogun drew significant criticism, particularly because the decision came after reports of a conversation between Infantino and United States President Donald Trump.
