Mansion Sports – Romelu Lukaku has officially ended his Serie A career after Napoli agreed to sell the Belgian forward to Fenerbahce.

The 33-year-old forward is scheduled to fly to Istanbul tonight to complete the move, which will see him join a Super Lig squad increasingly filled with star players.

Cheap Deal to Istanbul

The veteran forward leaves the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium for a reported transfer fee of €6 million plus performance-related bonuses, reflecting a significant change in the hierarchy of the club’s attack.

Napoli were able to approve Lukaku’s permanent departure after securing a long-term replacement earlier in the summer transfer window.

The Italian club completed the permanent signing of Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United in a deal worth €44 million (£38 million).

Despite being a major name in European football, Lukaku’s price reflects the Partenopei’s desire to remove his salary burden and focus on younger players such as Hojlund.

The Belgian international had recently experienced fitness problems, while tensions increased after he conducted a training session in Belgium without permission last spring, prompting sporting director Giovanni Manna to issue a warning regarding potential disciplinary action, ultimately paving the way for his swift departure to Turkey.

Fenerbahce Build Super Lig Powerhouse

The transfer places Lukaku at the centre of Fenerbahce’s ambitious rebuilding project as the Turkish giants aggressively strengthen their squad in an attempt to reclaim domestic glory.

He becomes the latest star player to arrive in Istanbul this summer, joining a strong lineup already strengthened by defender Nathan Ake from Manchester City, Mason Greenwood from Marseille, and forward Vedat Muriqi after a season in which he scored 23 goals in La Liga with Real Mallorca.

For Lukaku, the move to Turkey provides an opportunity to make a fresh start after a season heavily disrupted by physical problems.

Although he made only seven club appearances for Napoli last season due to persistent injury problems, the veteran forward proved his fitness on the international stage, featuring in all six matches and scoring three goals as Belgium reached the quarter-finals of this summer’s World Cup.

The End of the Conte Era

The transfer also comes following the departure of Antonio Conte, the manager who consistently managed to bring out the best in the forward during their periods together at Chelsea, Inter, and Napoli.

After reuniting at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, the pair immediately achieved success by winning the 2024-25 Serie A title, with Lukaku scoring 14 league goals, before eventually both leaving the club.

Their relationship was highly regarded throughout Italian football, rooted in the remarkably productive period they enjoyed together at San Siro.

Under Conte at Inter, Lukaku enjoyed the most explosive period of his career, scoring 34 and 30 goals in consecutive seasons to lead the Nerazzurri to the Europa League final and the 2020-21 Serie A title before securing a £97.5 million return to Chelsea.

A Constantly Changing Career Continues

Lukaku’s move to Turkey adds another destination to a career that has taken him around the world and through several elite European clubs with varying degrees of success.

After his second spell at Chelsea lasted only one season, the Belgian forward embarked on a series of loan spells, reaching the 2022-23 Champions League final with Inter before spending a period in Rome, which ultimately paved the way for his permanent move to Napoli in 2024.
