Neuer’s Agent Opens Door for Possible Germany National Team Return
Mansion Sports – The debate over Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper has been reignited after Manuel Neuer’s agent, Thomas Kroth, hinted at the possibility of the Bayern Munich veteran making a sensational comeback for Die Mannschaft at the World Cup.
From Retirement to Renewed Speculation
Neuer officially retired from international football in August 2024 after earning 124 caps. However, Germany’s ongoing struggles between the posts have put his name back in the spotlight.
With Marc-André ter Stegen sidelined by injury and Oliver Baumann seen only as a temporary fix, the call for stability is growing louder.
Kroth’s comments have now opened the door to a potential return for the 2014 World Cup-winning goalkeeper, despite his retirement once appearing final.
Focus on Bayern, But Pathway Remains Open
For now, Neuer’s primary focus remains on Bayern Munich. Yet, if his form holds strong and Germany continues to falter in finding a reliable option, public pressure for his return could intensify.
Such a scenario might force head coach Julian Nagelsmann into a difficult decision: rely once again on an experienced stalwart or continue to gamble on the next generation.
Speaking to Frankfurter Rundschau, Kroth stated:
“If I give a clear answer now, it would be like opening Pandora’s box. But Manuel is in excellent shape and performing at a very high level. If Nagelsmann feels there is a problem at the goalkeeper position, and Manuel is healthy and asked to step in, then of course he would not refuse.”
Germany’s Identity Crisis
Germany’s performances throughout 2025 have been far from convincing. Losses to Portugal and France in the Nations League, followed by a 0–2 defeat to Slovakia, have left their hopes of direct World Cup qualification in doubt.
From their fixtures this year, only victories over Italy and Northern Ireland have provided brief relief.
The situation has been worsened by the retirement of the last remaining figures from the 2014 golden generation, raising concerns over leadership within the squad.
Could Neuer’s Experience Be the Answer?
The prospect of Neuer’s return highlights a broader issue: Germany’s struggle to establish a clear identity and direction.
While goalkeeping may not be their most glaring weakness, the presence of Neuer could provide invaluable experience, composure, and leadership at a time when the team desperately needs stability.
Whether Nagelsmann decides to call back the trusted veteran or persist with giving full responsibility to the new generation remains one of the defining questions as the 2026 World Cup approaches.
