Roy Keane Urged to Return to Man United, Club Legend Also Backs Luis Enrique
Mansion Sports – Roy Keane is being tipped as a potential surprise candidate to return to management as Manchester United’s head coach.
The former hard-tackling Irish captain has, in recent years, become known as one of the most outspoken critics of the Red Devils’ performances, amid a period in which the club has repeatedly changed managers without achieving significant success since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Manchester United have recently dismissed Ruben Amorim and appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the 2025–2026 season.
Manchester United have once again entered a period of instability following their separation from Amorim, who lasted just over one year as the successor to Erik ten Hag.
Amorim was deemed to have failed in implementing the playing philosophy that previously brought him success with Sporting CP, prompting the club’s management to terminate the partnership after a 1–1 draw against Leeds United earlier this month.
Manchester United Appoint Michael Carrick as Interim Manager
This season has once again become a turbulent period for Manchester United. Following Amorim’s departure, Darren Fletcher briefly took charge of the team as caretaker manager for two matches, including an FA Cup defeat to Brighton.
However, the club ultimately entrusted the interim managerial role to Michael Carrick until the end of the season, hoping that the former midfielder can turn the situation around and salvage United’s campaign.
Roy Keane Urged to Return to Old Trafford
Although the main competition for the interim managerial position initially narrowed down to Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, several club legends have also pushed for Roy Keane to be given an opportunity.
Keane has previous managerial experience with Sunderland and Ipswich Town in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and has also been part of the coaching staff of the Republic of Ireland national team, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest.
Keane has frequently expressed his disappointment with Manchester United’s condition in the post-Ferguson era.
His former teammate, Jaap Stam, has even publicly stated his desire to see Keane manage the club in the future.
In an interview with Covers.com World Cup betting, Stam said that he would very much like to see Roy Keane return to Manchester United, either as a coach or in a managerial role.
He believes that many former United players are willing to help the club, whether as coaches or advisers, in pursuit of team success.
However, Stam also acknowledged that modern clubs tend to be cautious about appointing former players who frequently voice critical opinions in the media, as this can potentially create internal tension.
Jaap Stam Believes Luis Enrique Is Suited to Manage Manchester United
In addition to Keane, Jaap Stam also highlighted another name he considers highly suitable to become Manchester United’s permanent manager, namely former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique.
The Spanish manager recently led Paris Saint-Germain to their first Champions League title last season.
Stam described Luis Enrique as a high-quality manager with great dedication and passion for football.
He believes Enrique’s fluid and attractive playing style aligns well with the expectations of United supporters.
Furthermore, Enrique is known for allowing players the freedom to express themselves without abandoning the team’s system and philosophy.
Nevertheless, Stam admitted that it would be difficult for United to lure Enrique away from Paris, even though the coach is now entering the final 12 months of his contract with PSG.
Michael Carrick Prepares to Lead the Manchester Derby
While speculation regarding a permanent manager continues, Michael Carrick will oversee his first match as Manchester United’s head coach this weekend in the derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Although United have recorded three consecutive draws in the Premier League, a victory in that match could lift them to fourth place in the table, ahead of Liverpool on goal difference.
