Van Dijk Speaks Out: Liverpool Management Sacked Slot Without Permission
Mansion Sports – Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk revealed his surprise at the club's sudden decision to dismiss manager Arne Slot after an extremely disappointing season.
The veteran defender disclosed that the club's leadership did not consult him before parting ways with the Dutch coach, and he only learned of the dismissal after the news leaked to the media on Saturday.
Unexpected Managerial Departure
Following the Netherlands' disappointing 1-0 defeat to Algeria in a friendly match ahead of the World Cup, Van Dijk spoke about Slot's sudden departure.
Speaking to Dutch media outlet NOS, the central defender admitted that the news of his compatriot's dismissal came as a major surprise.
The defender explained that he had just arrived back in his homeland when he became aware of the situation.
"I landed in Amsterdam on Saturday afternoon and by then the news had already leaked. After that, of course, I had several conversations. However, the decision had already been made," Van Dijk revealed.
The club endured a difficult season, and their swift move to replace the coaching staff genuinely shocked the influential captain.
Costly Season and Champions League Elimination
Despite holding a crucial leadership role, Van Dijk was not involved in the club board's decision.
Slot's tenure delivered a historic Premier League title, but a disappointing fifth-place finish and a Champions League quarter-final elimination by PSG ultimately determined his fate.
Liverpool spent a record £446 million last summer to sign star players such as Alexander Isak, but poor performances and turmoil involving Mohamed Salah proved highly damaging.
"It is not as if they ask me how or what should be done," Van Dijk emphasized. However, he still expressed deep appreciation to the departing staff.
"I spoke with Arne and with Sipke. That was the most important thing for me. I am very grateful to them. For everything they have given, not only to me but also to the club."
"I only wish success for them. Hopefully Liverpool Football Club can recover well, because as a club this season was below standard," he added.
Disappointment on the International Stage
Amid the turmoil at Anfield, the Liverpool star is now focused on his international duties, although recent preparations have not gone smoothly.
The Netherlands national team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Algeria, a result that left the captain visibly frustrated ahead of the departure to the United States.
"You do not want this as a farewell match before leaving. If you look at the course of the match, I think we should have been leading by at least 2-0 in the first half. But yes, that was not the reality," he complained.
Highlighting the lack of sharpness in attack, he added: "You have to make things much more comfortable for yourself. It is clear that many things have to be much better. We have Monday to improve it and after that we have to be ready for the World Cup."
What Is Next for the Netherlands and Liverpool?
While Andoni Iraola has emerged as the strongest candidate to take over the managerial position at Anfield and rebuild the squad, Van Dijk must shift his full focus to international duty.
The Netherlands squad will fly on Thursday and still has one final friendly match against Uzbekistan on Monday before playing their opening World Cup match against Japan on June 14.
