The pre-match tribute was disrupted when a number of supporters in the Curva Sud turned their backs to the pitch and sang chants, drawing strong criticism from both the club and the opposing team’s coach, Maurizio Sarri.

The solemn atmosphere at Allianz Stadium was quickly overshadowed when the stadium observed a minute’s silence for Italian legend Mazzola, who passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday.

Several supporters in the Curva Sud deliberately turned their backs to the pitch and sang club chants during the tribute.

Mazzola left behind a remarkable legacy, including winning the 1968 European Championship with Italy as well as achieving numerous prestigious successes at European level with Juventus’ fierce rivals, Inter Milan.

The deeply rooted historical rivalry appeared to cause some home supporters to overlook the context, a reaction that Atalanta coach Sarri attributed to a lack of awareness of history among the younger generation.

Responding to the unpleasant incident during his post-match press conference, Sarri said:
