Leboeuf: Enzo & Caicedo Do Not Deserve to Play for Chelsea!
Mansion Sports – Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf has launched sharp criticism at the club’s expensive signings, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, stating that both lack the leadership qualities required to represent the club.
The World Cup winner spoke after a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton, which resulted in The Blues suffering five consecutive Premier League losses without scoring a goal.
Leboeuf Questions £200 Million Midfield
The fallout from Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton has intensified, with Leboeuf highlighting the midfield as the main problem area.
Despite a combined transfer cost of £223 million, Fernandez and Caicedo failed to control the game at the Amex Stadium as the visitors endured a historic defeat.
Leboeuf did not hold back in his criticism when discussing the two players, stating that their high price tags do not match the leadership required at Stamford Bridge.
In his interview with ESPN FC, he expressed his disappointment with the current state of the team, which has now suffered five consecutive Premier League defeats without scoring for the first time in over a century.
Comparison with Chelsea Legends
"We were players and we can see it, my teammate and fellow countryman Marcel Desailly said two days ago what we have been saying all along," said Leboeuf. "We do not have leaders in that team. We need a goalkeeper as a leader, we need a center-back, we need a midfielder."
The former Chelsea center-back compared the current players with legendary figures he played alongside during his successful period at Stamford Bridge.
He believes the current duo do not understand the burden of wearing the club’s shirt nor the demands of leading a club as big as Chelsea during difficult times.
He added: "Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez are not leaders. Sorry, I have seen leaders. I have played with Dennis Wise, Craig Burley, Roberto Di Matteo in midfield. They were leaders.
“I have not even mentioned defenders like Marcel Desailly, Steve Clarke and in attack with Vialli, Gullit, Zola, the players who were successful in my time, and I have not even discussed what happened afterward under Roman Abramovich.”
“But now enough is enough, those players do not deserve to play for Chelsea at this moment. They are not good enough."
Transfer Policy Under Scrutiny
While head coach Liam Rosenior is under significant pressure, Leboeuf believes the root of the problem lies in the club’s recruitment policy, which has focused more on signing young players rather than experienced ones.
The reliance on potential over experience has left the West London side appearing directionless during a difficult period this season, with a seven-point gap from the Premier League’s top five and only four matches remaining.
Leboeuf urged decision-makers to reassess their recruitment strategy if the club wants to return to the top of European football. "What can be changed now I do not know. But next year, please to the board, buy leaders. Otherwise, Chelsea will never be the Chelsea we know," he said.
Rosenior’s Future and FA Cup Hope
Although fans have called for Rosenior’s dismissal after five consecutive defeats without scoring, Leboeuf believes that changing the coach at this stage will not have a significant impact.
With an FA Cup semifinal against Leeds United approaching, he suggested that the club should wait before making a decision.
"You have to wait for the game against Leeds. If Rosenior goes, I do not think it will change the mindset for me," Leboeuf concluded.
"You have to wait until the end of the season and rethink the future and how you want to bring Chelsea back to what we all want to see. Changing Rosenior for someone else two months before the end of the season, I do not know if it will mean anything for me."
