Marc Guéhi Rejects Crystal Palace Contract Extension After Liverpool Move Collapses
Mansion Sports - Marc Guéhi is reportedly “furious” after his proposed transfer to Liverpool broke down on deadline day, and he has now decided against signing a new deal with Crystal Palace—raising the possibility of leaving as a free agent next summer.
The England international defender had been widely praised for maintaining a professional attitude throughout a turbulent transfer window. He has played almost every minute of Palace’s six fixtures this season—missing just one minute in total—and even scored in the 3–0 victory over Aston Villa last Sunday, when many believed his move to Liverpool was imminent.
That deal, however, ultimately collapsed. Palace’s inability to secure an adequate replacement, combined with manager Oliver Glasner’s determination to keep hold of his captain, were cited as the main reasons behind the decision.
Guéhi’s Frustration After Failed Transfer
While Guéhi initially chose to remain silent and even praised Palace and his teammates in post-match interviews, reports on Tuesday suggested he is preparing a strong statement about his situation.
According to The Guardian, the centre-back feels “angry” and “deeply unhappy” after Palace blocked his move to Liverpool, despite receiving a formal £35 million ($46.9 million) offer. Guéhi is said to have already completed part of his medical checks with Liverpool and was preparing to board a private jet to Merseyside before the transfer was suddenly called off.
The deal reportedly collapsed after Glasner threatened to resign if the captain was sold.
Guéhi’s Decision Regarding His Future
As reported by The Times, the 25-year-old has now refused to enter negotiations over any contract extension ahead of his current deal’s expiration next summer. He is also said to be considering stepping down from the captaincy, a role he only recently inherited from Joel Ward at the start of this season.
Intense Competition Among Top Clubs for Guéhi
Liverpool are expected to revive their pursuit of Guéhi next year, particularly as both parties had already reached a preliminary agreement on personal terms running until 2030 back in August.
However, competition for his signature is likely to intensify. With Guéhi firmly established as an England international at the peak of his career, several major European clubs—including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Juventus—have already expressed interest.
Given his status as a non-English player, Guéhi would be eligible to negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs starting in January should he continue to reject an extension at Crystal Palace.
