Set to Replacing Lewandowski, Barca Target Julian Alvarez
Mansion Sports – Barcelona has reportedly opened talks with Atletico Madrid regarding a potential major transfer for Julian Alvarez this summer.
The Blaugrana have identified the Argentine World Cup winner as their primary target to replace Robert Lewandowski, who is expected to leave the club as a free agent.
Flick Seeks a New Number Nine
According to ESPN, the 26-year-old Argentine has long been on the radar at Camp Nou, with scouts monitoring his development since his time at River Plate before his move to Manchester City.
Barca has now approached Atletico to explore the possibility of a deal in the summer.
However, securing his services will not be easy. Alvarez only joined Atletico in 2024 for a fee that could reach €95 million, and he is protected by a massive €500 million release clause.
While Barca hopes that the player’s personal desire to move could mirror Antoine Griezmann’s previous transfer between the two clubs, Atletico Madrid reportedly values the striker at around €120 million, which presents a significant financial obstacle for club president Joan Laporta to overcome.
Lewandowski Heading Toward the Exit
The pursuit of Alvarez is closely tied to Lewandowski’s future. The veteran Polish striker will be 38 years old when the next season begins, and although he remains a threat to opposing defenses, the club is preparing for a generational transition.
Reports indicate that Italian giants Juventus and AC Milan are currently leading the race to sign the legendary striker as a free agent, offering the prominent role he still desires in European competition.
Barca had previously shown willingness to offer Lewandowski a new contract, but with a significant salary reduction and a reduced role in the squad.
With the striker determined to maintain his status at the elite level, a departure appears to be the most likely outcome.
His exit would free up crucial space within the wage structure, allowing the Blaugrana to redirect financial resources toward a younger replacement capable of leading the attack in the long term.
Agent Denies House-Hunting Rumors
Despite the interest from the La Liga leaders being genuine, Alvarez’s camp has quickly dismissed speculation regarding an imminent move.
Recent reports suggested that the 26-year-old’s family had been seen searching for property in Catalonia, but his representative, Fernando Hidalgo, promptly stated that these claims were entirely false and fabricated.
Hidalgo stated: "1000% incorrect. No one in the family is in Barcelona. The last time was for the match against Atlético, and they returned to Madrid the following day."
Evaluating Attacking Options
In addition to their primary target Alvarez, Barcelona is also evaluating several other options to strengthen their attacking line.
The future of Marcus Rashford remains a key topic; the Manchester United forward is currently on loan in Spain and has made a positive impression on head coach Hansi Flick.
Although Barca has the option to make the deal permanent for €30 million, it is reported that they are hesitant to pay the full amount and are considering alternative profiles, including Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli.
The club is also expected to listen to offers for Ferran Torres, who is entering the final year of his contract.
Although Barca is currently dealing with complex financial fair play regulations, they are optimistic about returning to the league’s 1:1 spending rule this summer, which will be a key factor in funding transfers for players of Alvarez’s quality.
