Mohamed Salah Wants to “Say Goodbye in the Right Way” to the Fans
Mansion Sports – Liverpool star Mohamed Salah expressed his desire to “say goodbye in the right way” after playing a key role in the dramatic Merseyside derby victory against Everton on Sunday.
The Egyptian forward is now entering the final weeks of his trophy-laden career at Anfield and is determined to achieve one last major objective before his departure.
Record-Breaking Derby Goal
Salah ensured that his final appearance in the Merseyside derby became a historic moment by opening the scoring at Hill Dickinson Stadium as Liverpool secured a 2-1 victory.
The goal carried significance beyond the match result, as it allowed the 32-year-old to equal Steven Gerrard’s record as Liverpool’s top scorer in Merseyside derbies in the Premier League with nine goals.
Reflecting on the hard-fought victory, which was ultimately decided by a Virgil van Dijk header in stoppage time, Salah remained humble about his individual achievement. “It feels incredible, to be honest,” he told Sky Sports.
“The most important thing is to help the team to be more calm and maintain confidence, because we knew before the match that it would be difficult, it would be a tough game. I am happy in the end that we managed to win the match.”
Saying Goodbye in the “Right Way”
With only five matches remaining in his Liverpool career, the reality of Salah’s departure is beginning to be felt by the supporters at Anfield.
The forward confirmed last month that he will leave at the end of this season, bringing an end to a legendary journey on Merseyside that saw him win all major available titles.
When asked whether he has begun reflecting on his journey, Salah emphasized that his focus remains on the present. “No, but I hope to keep scoring goals and help the team at least to secure a Champions League spot this season. And hopefully I can say goodbye in the right way,” he explained.
Van Dijk Pays Tribute to an “Incredible” Teammate
The significance of Salah’s departure has not gone unnoticed by his teammates, particularly captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender offered high praise for a player who has been a partner in success over the past eight years.
“There will be many words that I will say in the coming weeks about him,” said Van Dijk.
“But listen, he is very important for us, on and off the pitch. I would say that appreciation is sometimes only truly felt when a player has left, but we truly appreciate him. He is an incredible teammate; clearly we have been through everything together, ups and downs.”
An Emotional Finale at Anfield
The final weeks of the season will undoubtedly be an emotional period for everyone associated with the club.
As Liverpool continues to fight to finish in the top five and secure a Champions League place, Salah’s contribution remains a crucial factor in their hopes.
“He will still be very important for the last five matches we have to play and then it will be an emotional moment for him and his family, of course,” added Van Dijk.
“But also for us, because he means so much to me, to the team, and of course to the fans. But first, we still have a job to finish and he knows that — that is the main focus.”
