Mansion Sports – Newcastle United secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2025/2026 Carabao Cup after claiming a convincing 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at St. James’ Park. The Magpies’ goals came from Fabian Schar in the 24th minute and Nick Woltemade in the 50th.
Playing in front of their home supporters, Eddie Howe’s side controlled the match from start to finish.
Newcastle dictated the tempo, created more scoring opportunities, and closed the game with a solid defensive display.
Tottenham, who arrived in fine form under Thomas Frank, struggled to penetrate the hosts’ well-organized back line.
The result continued Newcastle’s quest to defend their Carabao Cup title and brought them one step closer to a return to Wembley. For Tottenham, the defeat marked the end of their first domestic cup campaign of the season.
First Half
The match began with Tottenham attempting to take the initiative through Xavi Simons and Richarlison, but Newcastle quickly settled and seized control.
In the fifth minute, Sandro Tonali delivered an accurate free kick into the box that found Malick Thiaw, whose header was brilliantly tipped away by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.
Newcastle maintained the pressure. Anthony Elanga and Nick Woltemade combined effectively to open space for Harvey Barnes, who unleashed a fierce shot in the 11th minute that struck the side netting. Jacob Ramsey also came close in the eighth minute, but his effort was blocked by Pedro Porro.
Tottenham responded with a swift counterattack. Brennan Johnson had a promising chance in the 15th minute after receiving a pass from Pape Sarr, yet his first-time strike drifted narrowly wide.
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s team continued to dominate possession, holding over 60 percent of the ball within the opening 20 minutes.
Newcastle’s persistence finally paid off in the 24th minute. Tonali sent in a curling corner toward the far post, where Fabian Schar rose highest to head the ball into the bottom corner.
Kinsky managed to get a touch but could not prevent it from crossing the line, giving Newcastle a 1-0 lead.
The Magpies nearly extended their advantage before halftime. In the 41st minute, Barnes executed an acrobatic volley from Thiaw’s cross that struck the crossbar.
Tottenham’s best chance came in stoppage time when Richarlison’s header forced Aaron Ramsdale into a reflex save.
The first half concluded with Newcastle leading 1-0 after displaying superior efficiency and control in the attacking third.
Second Half
Just five minutes into the second half, Newcastle doubled their advantage. A poor clearance from Kevin Danso was quickly intercepted by Joe Willock, who delivered a precise cross into the box. Nick Woltemade met it with a powerful header that beat Kinsky to make it 2-0.
Tottenham attempted to regroup but continued to struggle against Newcastle’s compact defensive setup. Rodrigo Bentancur had an opportunity with a header from Porro’s cross in the 54th minute, but Ramsdale reacted swiftly to push the ball away.
Richarlison threatened again in the 67th minute with a low drive from the left flank, yet the Newcastle goalkeeper remained alert to deny him.
Spurs introduced Randal Kolo Muani and Mohammed Kudus to add attacking impetus, but their final-third execution remained ineffective.
Newcastle looked more dangerous on the counterattack. Willock and Elanga repeatedly tested Kinsky, while Thiaw came close with a late header that sailed narrowly wide.
Tensions rose in the closing stages when Joelinton and Kudus exchanged heated words, prompting referee Chris Kavanagh to issue yellow cards to both players.
Newcastle managed the game calmly in the final minutes, maintaining their composure until the final whistle confirmed a deserved 2-0 victory.
