Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Undergo Surgery After Suffering Horrific Injury in Milan Match Against Parma
Mansion Sports – Ruben Loftus-Cheek is scheduled to undergo surgery after sustaining a severe injury in the Serie A match between AC Milan and Parma.
The former Chelsea player suffered a fracture to the alveolar bone that forms and supports the tooth sockets, a serious injury that could potentially cause a long-term absence.
Loftus-Cheek jumped to head the ball early in Milan’s latest Serie A match and collided heavily with Parma goalkeeper Edoardo Corvi.
The goalkeeper attempted to punch the ball away but instead struck the midfielder’s jaw, after which he was stretchered off the pitch.
The former Chelsea and Crystal Palace midfielder did not lose consciousness but lost teeth.
According to reports from Sky Italy, the midfielder sustained a fracture to the alveolar bone, the part of the skull that keeps teeth in place.
As a result, Loftus-Cheek will undergo surgery and could be absent for several months, almost entirely ending his hopes of inclusion in the England squad for the World Cup in North America this summer.
Loftus-Cheek’s Performance
The England midfielder, who has earned 11 international caps for his country, has recorded 27 appearances for Milan in all competitions this season.
During that period, he scored three goals and provided one assist, but now must face a lengthy recovery period.
It was reported in October that Milan had held discussions with Loftus-Cheek regarding a new contract.
His strong physique, technical ability, and talent for making late runs into the penalty area have made him a key player for the Rossoneri.
That impressive club performance led to his recall to the England national team after a long absence.
While Milan and head coach Massimiliano Allegri want to secure his future, they are reportedly set to wait until the end of the season to open formal talks, so that they can assess his performance and physical condition over a full season.
Loftus-Cheek’s Recall to the England National Team
The midfielder was praised as “complete” by sporting director Igli Tare in June. He said: “How to replace Reijnders? Milan have Loftus-Cheek, one of the most complete midfielders in Europe, he can be fundamental for this season. There is no doubt about the player’s quality, but we must be careful regarding injury issues.”
In September, Loftus-Cheek was called up by Thomas Tuchel to the England squad for the first time in six years. He was an unused substitute in England’s 5–0 World Cup qualifying victory over Latvia.
Next Steps
Milan will face Cremonese next. They will almost certainly be without Loftus-Cheek, with the club currently in second place in Serie A, 10 points behind their fierce rivals, Inter.
