Mansion Sports – Footmercato reports that Italian head coach Roberto De Zerbi has submitted a request to Olympique Marseille to be released from his contract following the club’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League.

This failure has dealt a significant blow to the Ligue 1 side and has triggered widespread speculation regarding the future of the head coach.

Olympique Marseille were forced to end their Champions League campaign after suffering a surprising 0-3 defeat against Club Brugge in the final match of the league phase. The result confirmed their early exit from Europe’s elite competition.

Previously, reports had circulated that the club’s management was evaluating De Zerbi’s position and considering the possibility of terminating his tenure. However, the latest report has revealed an unexpected development.

De Zerbi’s Request and the Situation at Marseille

A major surprise emerged from Footmercato’s report, which stated that Roberto De Zerbi himself requested the club’s management to terminate his contract.

He believes that the relationship and compatibility between himself and the club can no longer be sustained.

The 46-year-old coach has so far recorded 17 victories, two draws, and 11 defeats with Marseille across all competitions this season.

These statistics reflect a campaign that has not been entirely stable since he took charge of the team.

De Zerbi was appointed as Olympique Marseille’s head coach in the summer of 2024, after previously managing several clubs including Foggia, Palermo, Benevento, Sassuolo, Shakhtar Donetsk, and Brighton and Hove Albion.
