Vinicius Junior Considered Too Old for a Transfer to Chelsea
Mansion Sports – A move by Vinicius Junior to Chelsea is still regarded as a “fairytale call,” according to former Blues midfielder Jody Morris.
The Real Madrid star is considered to be already “too old” for the Chelsea ownership at Stamford Bridge, who prefer to focus on young players and long-term potential.
Nevertheless, his status as a Galactico at the Santiago Bernabéu continues to generate discussion regarding a possible transfer to the Premier League in 2026.
Transfer Issues: Saudi Arabian and Premier League Links Amid Contract Stalemate
Vinicius is currently approaching the final year of his contract in the Spanish capital, a situation that forces La Liga giants Real Madrid to make several major decisions.
A contract extension for the Brazilian international has not been entirely ruled out, especially after Xabi Alonso, the coach who had previously been at odds with him, was relieved of his position.
New talks with the South American player are being planned in Madrid, with the hope that a compromise beneficial to all parties can be reached.
However, Vinicius remains reluctant to provide clarity regarding his future plans and continues to keep various options open.
It has been reported that high-value offers have been prepared by clubs from the Saudi Pro League, supported by financial resources that are difficult to ignore. In addition, several major teams in England are also said to have placed Vinicius on their radar.
Reasons Vinicius Is Unlikely to Arrive at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea are among the clubs linked with Vinicius, but Morris, who spent time in West London as both a player and a coach, does not see the likelihood of a major deal taking place.
He told AceOdds that he personally likes Vinicius Junior very much and judged the player to have performed outstandingly in the Spanish Super Cup.
He praised the goal scored by Vinicius as well as his dominance over Jules Kounde in that match.
Morris stated that he would personally like to sign Vinicius, but he feels that the player’s age does not align with the current ownership policy of the club.
Although Vinicius is 25 years old and approaching 26, Morris doubts whether Chelsea would be willing to spend the large sum required.
He also referred to various assets that the club have already sold and questioned whether there is still sufficient financial room to complete a transfer for Vinicius.
He emphasized that although he would very much like to see Vinicius play for Chelsea, he is not convinced that such a transfer is realistic.
In addition, he also questioned whether Vinicius himself would truly be interested in joining Chelsea in the club’s current condition.
According to him, the idea sounds appealing, but it remains in the realm of a fairytale, and he does not see it becoming a reality.
New Goalkeeper: Chelsea Linked with a Move for Maignan
Morris also responded to speculation suggesting that Chelsea could look for a new first-choice goalkeeper in the summer of 2026, as an upgrade on the Spanish goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is reportedly attracting Chelsea’s interest as he approaches free-agent status.
However, Morris believes that Todd Boehly and Chelsea’s management missed a major opportunity when they allowed their domestic rivals Manchester City to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain.
In his comments regarding the goalkeeper issue, Morris stated that he is not entirely convinced that Chelsea should do everything possible to sign Mike Maignan.
He believes that when Donnarumma was available in the previous summer, he was the figure Chelsea should have pursued.
He also acknowledged that Robert Sanchez has shown significant improvement this season, but questioned whether that would be sufficient to make him the main goalkeeper for the next three or four years if Chelsea want to rise to a higher level.
Morris emphasized that if Chelsea decide to replace Sanchez, the replacement must be clearly superior, not merely an equal competitor.
Morris praised Sanchez for his dominance in the penalty area, his ability to anticipate the ball from set-piece situations, and his contribution in initiating attacks quickly.
He stressed that if Maignan were truly brought in to replace Sanchez, his quality would have to be several levels higher, considering that Donnarumma is a world-class goalkeeper capable of taking a team to a higher level.
Heavy Spending: Chelsea Always Seek Additional Strength
Robert Sanchez has become the first-choice option for Enzo Maresca and Chelsea’s new head coach, Liam Rosenior, this season.
Nevertheless, Chelsea are known as a club that is always active in the transfer market to strengthen their squad.
This situation opens up the possibility for the club to consider moves for Vinicius or Maignan at some stage in the future.
